Derrick Lewis is fighting Daniel Cormier at MSG for the UFC heavyweight championship. but it wouldn't have been possible if he didn't spend over 3 years in prison.

"Isn't it unbelievable that it took 10 years (to get the recognition), but it is what it is", Cormier said Thursday from media day for UFC 230, which he is headlining with a heavyweight title defence against Derrick Lewis.

Cormier (21-1, 1 no-contest) fights for now as both the UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champ, though his days as a dual champion are numbered no matter the outcome against Lewis.

"It's history, baby", said Cormier, who improved his heavyweight record to 15-0 (4-0 in UFC).

In the main event, we'll get the return of the former light heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones as he takes on an old foe in a rematch with Alexander "The Mauler" Gustafsson for the vacant light heavyweight title.

In the event, a clinical, controlled performance from Cormier meant he retained his heavyweight strap to keep alongside his light heavyweight version, and became the first man to defend belts in two weight divisions. Then on October 9, the UFC announced that Daniel Cormier would defend the heavyweight title against No. 2-ranked Derrick Lewis.

Cormier's last fight ended with theatrics after he called Lesnar into the cage, and Lesnar shoved Cormier in the chest while the fighters traded insults to hype a potential future bout.

Daniel Cormier insists he's going to end his career as an active MMA fighter when he turns 40 in five months.

Is Lewis deserving of a shot at a UFC title?

But Cormier has solidified himself as one of MMA's greatest fighters and most dominant wrestlers.

"I win the fight, I go, 'Brock, you obviously wanted it. Get your a** in here if you wanted it.' Now, I didn't know he was going to push me".

"I'll be ready to push him or hit him upside the head". "I just had to stay longer in the gym".

But for Daniel Cormier and challenger Derrick Lewis, their biggest beef is over chicken. It is not the best visual for a guy like me.

"I got Dana on the phone that day and was like 'What the?' and Dana doesn't take too many calls from fighters", Eubanks said Thursday in NY.

Cormier gives Lewis a kiss.
