"That "you have to win" because if you win, our children will know that being themselves, being who they are, that they can succeed".

Democratic Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison was the first Muslim elected to Congress.

Democrat Ilhan Omar holds up a newspaper after she was interviewed by The Associated Press Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, in Minneapolis after winning Minnesota's 5th Congressional District race in Tuesday's election.

A Somali-American refugee from Minnesota and a Palestinian-American activist from MI made history on Tuesday as the first two Muslim women elected to the United States House of Representatives. Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American Democrat running for the House in Minnesota, could join Tlaib in Congress.

She won a seat in the state's legislature in 2016, becoming the first Somali-American lawmaker in the country.

Omar, who arrived in the USA at the age of 14 after fleeing civil war in Somalia and lived in Kenya's Dadaab camp, campaigned on a platform which called for universal healthcare and tuition-free colleges.

Labour expected to seek Budget amendments to increase tax on high earners
Mr Hammond's decision to spend the proceeds of better than expected borrowing figures raised eyebrows among economic observers. Then Geordie Greig arrived and Hammond was gifted an usually friendly interview during the height of Tory conference.

The 42-year-old was born in Detroit to Palestinian immigrant parents. A self-styled progressive, Tlaib is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and was arrested two years ago for disrupting a Trump speech in Detroit.

Jones lost the Democratic primary for the full term to Tlaib.

Tlaib celebrated her congressional victory not with an American flag, but with a Palestinian flag.

She has become "a source of pride for Palestine and the entire Arab and Muslim world", her uncle Bassam Tlaib told Reuters on Tuesday.

MA and CT will also send black women to Congress as firsts for their states, while Arizona and Tennessee are getting their first female senators.

Omar said President Trump's "politics of fear" motivated her to get in the race. New Mexico's Deb Haaland and Kansas attorney Sharice Davids were elected the first two Native American women to serve in Congress.
