Marijuana legalization on the ballot in four states

Marijuana legalization on the ballot in four states Michigan Voters Legalize Marijuana

His platform includes legalizing medical marijuana, which voters in 14 of 16 counties across the state signaled support for in advisory referendums on the ballot. It came as the state was still setting up its medical marijuana system, which voters approved by a wide margin two years ago.

Utah's governor said he would call lawmakers into a special session after the midterm election to pass the deal into law, even if Tuesday's initiative failed. A 10 percent tax on retail sales will be distributed between "local governments, K-12 education, and infrastructure projects".

Voters in Missouri and Utah both approved ballot measures to allow the sale of medical marijuana, meaning cannabis for medicinal purposes is now available to half of the country. Although North Dakota won't be legalizing recreational marijuana this midterm election season, cannabis companies in the United States and Canada rallied on new market opportunities in MI and what appears to be a shift in public perception about the drug.

Medical marijuana has been legal in MI since voters approved its use in a 2008 ballot initiative.

Long demonized as a unsafe drug, and still considered an illicit substance with no medical use by the federal government, marijuana is increasingly going mainstream as investors pour billions into the industry.

MI is significantly less restrictive than other states with legalized weed - while most others only allow residents to possess up to one ounce of bud, MI residents will be allowed to hold up to 2.5 ounces.

"Momentum is gaining for change in Congress to allow states to determine their own marijuana policies", Morgan Fox, media relations director at the National Cannabis Industry Association, told Wired.

He's not alone in thinking more needs to be done to address people who are locked up for non-violent marijuana-related offenses. Sales there, estimated to start in 2020, could grow to as much as US$1.7b in the coming years, according to the trade publication Marijuana Business Daily. Amendment 3 would allow doctors to prescribe weed, but would impose a 15-percent tax and ban home cultivation; and Proposition 3 would tax marijuana at 2 percent and set a list of qualifying conditions.

In addition to the recreational market, more states are embracing medical marijuana. Support for medical marijuana is considerably higher: A Quinnipiac University poll conducted last April put it at 93 percent. More than 60% of Florida voters voted in favor of a measure to restore voting rights to more than a million felons who have completed their sentences, reports CNN.

It's unclear if marijuana bills could get through the Republican-held Senate.
