‘I don’t know Matt Whitaker,’ Trump says of new acting attorney general

Jimmy Kimmel Fears for Russia probe as Trump fires Jeff Sessions

The Senate's top Republican expressed confidence Friday that the Russian Federation investigation will be allowed to run its course, saying President Donald Trump has never signaled to him that special counsel Robert Mueller could be fired. There is no suggestion that Mr Whitaker's role is being investigated.

McConnell didn't weigh in on whether Whitaker should recuse himself from the Mueller probe. That would include specifying that only a Senate-confirmed Justice Department official - which Whitaker is not - could dismiss Mueller. McConnell on Friday said he didn't "have any advice to give the administration on that". McConnell said he expects Whitaker to be "a very interim" appointee.

Legal scholars are debating the constitutionality of his appointment, with some lawyers saying it is illegal because he has not been confirmed by the Senate.

"This is a man who should have recused himself", said Gerald Harris, a retired judge who participated in the protest in NY.

The Orlando demonstration was made up of dozens of people and wasn't limited to Democrats, with Republican voters also on the scene, said Derek Bryan, 35 of Oviedo, one of the protesters.

"Mueller will be allowed to do his job", Graham said in a Friday interview on Fox News Radio.

Whitaker was named acting attorney general on Wednesday, after Jeff Sessions was forced out of the position by Trump.

He said he had not spoken with Whitaker about Mueller's investigation, which until now has been overseen by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

On Thursday night, people in cities across the USA participated in the #ProtectMueller march in support of the special counsel, declaring "Trump is not above the law".

Speaking to reporters at the White House before he left on a trip to Paris, Trump defended his choice of Whitaker, saying the former US attorney for the southern district of Iowa had an excellent reputation and came highly recommended by former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, who is now Trump's ambassador to China.

Sen. Mitch McConnell on Friday said he does not believe the special counsel Robert Mueller is threatened by the ousting of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Of the scrutiny Whitaker is facing, Trump said: "It's a shame that no matter who I put in they go after".

A spokeswoman for the Justice Department has said Whitaker would oversee all matters under its jurisdiction, including the Mueller investigation. Those demonstrating in the "Nobody is above the Law" protest called for Whitaker to recuse himself from the investigation.
