Djokovic proud of ‘amazing five months’ after Khachanov upset

Novak Djokovic US Open and Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is unbeaten in 21 matches
Chelsea Rogers | 07 November, 2018, 08:20

Novak Djokovic earned a place in tomorrow's Paris Masters final with victory over Roger Federer after what he described as "one of the best" of their matches against each other.

Chasing his 100th career title after winning the Swiss Indoors last Sunday, the 20-time Grand Slam champion was hardly troubled.

Federer won 28/29 first serves, saved the only break point he faced, and took full advantage of the fast courts to attack the front of the court with plenty of success. Moreover, in the third set, Djokovic tussled to stay in the tournament and broke the Croat in the eighth game which happened to be the rock-bottom for his 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 quarterfinal victory.

Djokovic, who will reclaim the top ranking from Rafael Nadal for the first time in two years, made a strong start in his pursuit of a record-equalling 33rd Masters title as he broke for a 3-1 lead in the opening set.

"Karen played really well and he deserved to win", Djokovic said.

"High quality tennis. Next to the match I played against Nadal in the semis of Wimbledon, this was definitely the most exciting match I was playing this year, and probably the best quality tennis match that I was part of". I'm just pleased to be in the semis. View FedEx ATP Head2Head for the following match-up at the Rolex Paris Masters and vote for the players you think will win!

"It was a very intense match", Djokovic said.

Djokovic, victor of the Wimbledon and US Open championships this year, will now face Roger Federer or Kei Nishikori for a place in Sunday's final.

Cilic wrapped up the opener in the 10th game, ending Wimbledon and US Open champion Djokovic's 30-set win streak in the process.

The four-time victor of Paris title having reigned in 2009 and 2013-15, will return to the year-end top spot for a fifth time in the ATP Rankings tomorrow. What more can I ask for?

A far tougher test lies in store for Federer, however, with Djokovic up next and on a 21-match winning run as he bids for a fourth consecutive title.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was the last man to consign the 14-time grand slam champion to defeat at the Rogers Cup back in August and it was 22-year-old Khachanov striking another blow for youth over experience, claiming the biggest title of his career in Bercy. "I'm always excited to play against him, particularly because it's been a long time [since we've played] and I feel I can just go out there and see what happens", Federer said.
