Authorities confirmed that at least 13 people have been killed after the bus veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming auto before smashing through roadside barriers and flying off a bridge in Chongqing's Wanzhou District last Sunday.

Police examined nearly 2,300 hours of surveillance videos along the bus route to determine the cause of the accident which gripped the nation.

Rescuers lifted the wreck of the bus from the river Wednesday night.

A fist fight between a woman passenger and a driver caused a bus to plunge from a bridge into the mighty Yangtze River in southwest China, killing at least 13 people, police said on Friday. She walked up to the driver's seat and scolded him.

Police also posted dashcam video from a nearby auto showing the bus colliding with an oncoming vehicle before smashing through a guardrail and falling into the Yangtze.

In the video, a female passenger approaches the driver, hitting him directly in the face with her phone.

"If the lady didn't physically attack the driver, would this accident still happen to Route 22 bus?" one user wrote.

Reports in the local media cited by EuroNews say that the woman missed her bus stop and, when she realized it, immediately asked the driver to pull over so she could get off.

The driver then took his right arm off the steering wheel as he tried to defend himself.

Thirteen bodies were reported to have been found.

"The behaviour of both the passenger and driver has severely endangered the safety of all other passengers and has violated the law, ' police said, adding the tragedy served as an 'extremely painful lesson".
