In July 2011, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft belonging to Trinidad-based Caribbean Airlines crashed at Cheddi Jagan after landing too far down the runway and running out of braking space, injuring several people.

The flight was departing from Georgetown, Guyana at 2am local time and was meant to land in Toronto, Canada.

When the plane landed, the pilots had trouble stopping it and it eventually came to a halt at the end of the runway.

He said the injuries were not life-threatening and the wounded were taken to a hospital near the airport in this country bordering Venezuela to the east.

The plane, which had 120 passengers and eight crew members on board, had been in the air for about 20 minutes when the pilot indicated it was experiencing problems with its hydraulic system, Guyana officials said at a news conference.

The Fly Jamaica plane which was en route to Toronto is said to have developed a "technical problem".

Among those on board were 35 Guyanese, 82 Canadians, one American citizen, a Trinidadian and one Pakistani. "We are providing local assistance and will release further information as soon as it is available", added the release.

"There were (some people) injured because of coming down the slide or not getting off the flight fast enough, so the people behind them were kicking them", he told Canada's public broadcaster CBC.

The Guyana Civil Aviation Authority is leading an investigation and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, which automatically assists with inquiries under global rules, was notified, officials said.

One of the aircraft's turbines is seen badly damaged after it apparently hit the barrier.

Boeing said it was looking into the incident.
