Trump calls Kavanaugh sexual assault claims a hoax

The confirmation gave the Republican president a major political victory ahead of crucial November 6 congressional elections, with Mr Trump's second lifetime selection for the nation's highest judicial body.
While President Trump railed against Democrats and apologized to Kavanaugh "on behalf of our nation" during that ceremony, the new justice seemed to be trying to bring the temperature down after his narrow confirmation.
With all the sitting justices in attendance, along with Kavanaugh's family and top admiration officials, Trump said Kavanaugh had been the victim of a "campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception".
Kavanaugh has also begun moving in to his new office at the Supreme Court, taking over space previously used by Justice Samuel Alito, who moved into offices vacated by Kennedy. "In our country, a man or a woman must always be presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty".
Within a half hour of the start of his first oral argument on the Supreme Court Tuesday, Kavanaugh had already proved he wouldn't be a silent presence on the bench like Justice Clarence Thomas, who went through a similarly bruising confirmation process in 1991 but was famously quiet during questioning.
"Say it loud, and say it clear: Kavanaugh's not welcome here!" they chanted, dressed in long red robes and white hats in temperatures slated to reach 80 degrees. "Known as a judge's judge, he is fair-minded, unbiased, and even-handed person. We don't give up", he said.
Kavanaugh replaces Kennedy, a conservative jurist who often cast the deciding swing vote on ideologically divisive issues, upholding abortion and gay rights and the use of affirmative action aiding racial minorities in college admissions.
Questions from Kavanaugh and Justice Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump's two high-court picks, suggested they could vote against the Trump administration and side with a criminal defendant from Florida who is fighting an increase in his sentence from just over six years to possibly more than 15 years.
In his speech at the ceremony, Kavanaugh said the emotional Senate confirmation process "tested" him, "but it did not change me".
The two-vote margin of victory in the Senate made it the closest Supreme Court confirmation vote since 1881 - and by far the most contentious since Clarence Thomas in 1991. My goal is to be a great Justice for all Americans and for all of America. Justice Kavanaugh's wife, daughters and parents were also present.
As the newest member of the court Kavanaugh will take on a few special jobs. "Every American can be assured that I will be an independent and impartial Justice devoted to equal justice under law", he said.
Senate Democratic strategists tell TPM that their candidates in the deep-red states saw some overall degradation in their numbers around the time of Kavanaugh hearings, numbers that have been borne out by some other recent public surveys. "My approach to judging remains the same".

If confirmed by the Senate, Kavanaugh would replace Justice Anthony Kennedy who announced his retirement early this year. The story is expected to conclude on Saturday afternoon with a final roll call nearly solidly along party lines.

I think there's something being released on Netflix soon, a documentary based around that fight, and it will have all the rounds. If one guy wants to do it because he has something to gain by fighting the other guy. "It has to be a win, win, win situation".
