Members of the Florida National Guard chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense (CBRN) Enhanced Response Force Package prepare to help citizens in affected areas prior to landfall of Hurricane Michael at Camp Blanding Joint Training Center near Starke, Fla., on October 9, 2018.

Hurricane Michael made landfall as a Category 4 storm after rapidly strengthening winds hit speeds of over 150 miles per hour (240 km/h).

The stunning scope of Hurricane Michael's rampage started coming into focus Thursday, as dawn in Panama City, Florida revealed a sprawling mess of nearly unimaginable devastation wrought by the third-most powerful hurricane in recorded history to lash the US mainland. Now a tropical storm, Michael is headed to the Carolinas.

Roads were filled with piles of floating debris.

President Donald Trump told reporters he will most likely visit Florida on Sunday or Monday to meet with local officials and survey damage from the storm.

Florida governor Rick Scott had warned of "unimaginable devastation" from the approaching menace, and it looked like he was proved right on Thursday morning as the first rescue and fix crews arrived to assess the damage.

Up the coast in Pensacola, the water temperature is 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) - 8 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Celsius) higher than normal for this time of year.

"Unfortunately, as attractive as the storm is up top, it is deadly down below", Disharoon said.

The storm's intensity waned steadily as it pushed inland and curled northeasterly into Georgia. It killed two people, left thousands without power, uprooted trees and destroyed the region.

Large parts of Florida have suffered "unimaginable destruction" after the third-strongest hurricane in USA history slammed into the sunshine state. A metal carport was picked up by the wind and crashed through a roof, hitting the girl's head, said Travis Brooks, the county's emergency management director.

Among those brought to safety were nine people rescued by helicopter from a bathroom of their Panama City home after their roof collapsed, Petty Officer 3rd Class Ronald Hodges said.

Smith could not provide details on the victim.

According to an advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Michael's eyewall was strengthening as it maintained maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour.

McNamara said their are more than 100 volunteers at the Tallahassee headquarters - some based in Florida- others from across the country, all working to help. It morphed into a fierce Category 4 by the time it came ashore near Mexico Beach, Florida on Wednesday afternoon with wind speeds of 250 km/h. "We haven't seen as robust of an evacuation response from the civilian population that we have seen in other storms". "Panama City, I don't know if there will be much left".

"Michael should weaken as it crosses the southeastern United States through Thursday", the NHC said.

In an advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the potential for a catastrophic event along the Florida Panhandle becomes even more real as Category 4 Hurricane Michael has increased in intensity. It forced more than 375,000 people up and down the Gulf Coast to evacuate as it gained strength quickly while crossing the eastern Gulf of Mexico toward north Florida.
