Serena Williams row: Tennis umpires mulling boycott of matches involving American star

The apparent plot to refuse the chair when Williams competes is seemingly a direct response to the treatment Carlos Ramos received for slapping Williams with three code violations during the American's 2-6, 4-6 US Open final loss to Naomi Osaka on September 8.

YOKOHAMA, Japan (Reuters) - Japan's Nissan Motor Co has signed U.S. Open champion Naomi Osaka as its next brand ambassador, the automaker said on Thursday, tapping the tennis star's youth, drive and Japanese roots to appeal to younger customers. Her coach, Frenchman Patrick Mouratoglou, later admitted he had signaled to Williams from the stands, but said she had not seen him.

"He needed to tell Serena - he can't apologise he did the right thing there, he can't apologise, he's got to be the boss - but all he had to say to Serena is "I am not attacking your character".

Umpires are allegedly unhappy at how 2018 US Open women's final umpire Carlos Ramos was treated during and after the match. "I don't think [Serena] looked at me, so that's why she didn't think I was (coaching)", he told ESPN. All that pales in comparison to the furore surrounding Williams, who was given a game penalty for accusing chair umpire Carlos Ramos of being a "liar" and "a thief for stealing a point" from her in the women's final.

Williams was fined $17,000 for the rules violations, and the International Tennis Federation backed Ramos, saying his "decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules".

The last certainly has not been heard over US Open ladies final outburst as Umpires are considering boycotting Serena Williams' future games.

Djokovic beats heat and Millman to reach US Open semis
The late-evening's humidity played a factor. "He was apologising, he felt very sorry that he has to leave the court and change". Open officials began putting it in play last week, when temperatures first soared into the mid-90s.

If the contract goes through, this would be the biggest deal the sportswear giant has ever given to a female tennis player and it could propel Osaka up the ranks on Forbes' 2018 list of highest paid female athletes, which Williams now leads. Once renewed, she can be part of Forbes' list of highest-paid women in sports, possibly placing second-just below Serena.

The umpiring community also had Ramos' back, as they have threatened to boycott Williams' matches.

Meanwhile, tennis umpires are also considering forming a union as they feel no one is standing up for them.

"It's an unhappy situation but à la carte refereeing doesn't exist", the 47-year-old told Portugal's Tribuna Expresso.

"Don't you worry about me!" he added.

He has been assigned to officiate the Davis Cup semifinal matches between the United States and host Croatia later this week.
