Police say the officer, who has not yet been publicly identified, arrived at the downtown apartment complex after working her normal police shift and was still in full uniform upon entering the victim's apartment, which she thought was her own.

However, it was not the right apartment.

The officer called 911 and Jean was rushed to an area hospital where he later died.

The trigger-happy cop shot the 26-year-old resident, according to a Dallas Police Department statement.

Friends of Jean's have taken to social media leaving their thoughts, prayers and well wishes for friends and family of the young man. They can't believe what happened.

Neighbours said they can access their building with a regular key or by using a keypad code.

"If you are here tonight, I want to challenge you: I don't want this moment to ease your conscience", Waters said, his voice cracking.

"There is no evidence at this time to suggest that he was armed", Dallas police spokeswoman Debra Webb said in an email. "I don't know if she was exhausted, but that's pretty scary".

According to reports, a black man in Dallas was killed by a police officer after she went into the wrong apartment thinking it was hers, ultimately shooting him to death.

The officer involved in the incident was the one who reported the shooting.

"This is a very unique situation", Hall told reporters at a Friday afternoon press conference.

The unnamed officer is now on administrative leave. According to Chief Hall, it's unclear what the interaction was between the officer and Jean. The officer has not been interviewed and was not detained.

A warrant for the woman's arrest was reportedly set to be issued, but there was no confirmation that either of those things had happened as of Friday night.

There are still a lot of questions about the events leading up to the shooting.

Dallas authorities say the uniformed officer was "confronted" by Jean, pulled her gun on him and fired. That is why we are working as vigorously and meticulously as we can to ensure the integrity of the case and the department is upheld.

"We're all deeply grieved", Jana Rucker said.

"This is a bad tragedy".

The dead man was named as Botham Shem Jean.

Former classmates from Harding University told the ChristianChronicle.org that he was known for his deep faith and his lovely singing voice.

Botham Shem attended private Christian institution Hardin University, where he actively participated in the campus ministry and was a member of the Good News Singers. "He had a passion for service and uplifting leaders".
