Urging the customers to immediately contact their banks after their credit cards details were compromised, the airways said it was investigating the theft that happened between August 21 and September 5.
Sometime between August 21 and September 5, more than 380,000 customer transactions on the British Airwayswebsite were compromised by hackers.
While British Airways has not publicly revealed how it was exploited, Leigh Anne Galloway, cyber-security resilience lead at Positive Technologies, toldeWEEK in an email that the fact that the attack exploited vulnerabilities on BA's website and app gives us a picture of how the data breach occurred.
The airways said if you believe you have been affected, please contact your bank or credit card provider and follow their recommended advice.
While reacting to the unfortunate incidence, the airline's chairman Alex Crux apologized for the "the disruption" that the criminal activity may have caused its teeming customers. We will continue to keep our customers updated with the very latest information.
The hack, which has now been fixed, did not involve travel or passport details. The airline said last week that about 20,000 customers may have had personal information compromised before all 1.7 million accounts were locked down. On the other side, cybercriminals are very proactive, and as soon as a new vulnerability is discovered in a popular CMS they start exploiting it in the wild. BA claims it did not store CVV numbers-that's banned under global standards, the BBC points out-so card details were probably "intercepted, rather than harvested from a BA database".
In a swift response to this invasion, British Airways says it has reported to the police to help get to the root of the matter.
