Amazon chief Jeff Bezos gives $2bn to help the homeless

Jeff Bezos of Amazon speaks at the Bush Centers Forum on Leadership in Dallas Here’s why the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos wore pajamas to a board meeting

The wealth that Bezos has amassed hasn't come without controversy, as many critics point to poor working conditions at his facilities while others say he doesn't do enough for the public good. The new "Bezos Day One Fund" is the result; it'll work to issue "awards" to existing nonprofits that provide shelter and food to homeless young families.

Bezos, whose stake in Amazon is worth about $160 billion United States, says that he'll call it the Bezos Day One Fund.

Bezos and his company are frequent targets of criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump and, more recently, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who's made the billionaire a symbol of income inequality when pushing for better wages for workers and fewer government benefits for companies. Since March 2016, Amazon customers have also been able to order items from the Mary's Place's wishlist on the site, such as diapers and socks.

While Bezos was thinking about where best to put his own money, Amazon stepped up its corporate giving, focused on growing inequality in its hometown of Seattle.

The initiative will be called the Bezos Day One Fund, borrowing from Amazon's corporate mantra to approach tasks with the initiative of a startup's first day.

Intensifying Hurricane Florence could strike US Southeast
McMaster said he had asked President Donald Trump to declare a federal emergency in SC in anticipation of the storm's arrival. Florence is not now expected to impact metro Atlanta, as the storm is now forecast to remain northeast of the area.

More than a year ago, Bezos posted to Twitter a request for suggestions on philanthropic initiatives created to make a difference in the short term. At the time, he said he was interested in projects that address urgent need but also produce lasting impact. While he has financially supported cancer research and scholarships for immigrants, among other causes, Bezos has primarily devoted his fortune to his Blue Origin rocket company, which he described on Thursday as an "investment in the future of our planet through the development of foundational space infrastructure". However, he said it is unsafe for politicians to "demonize the media".

"The Bezos Family Foundation - and Jeff obviously has a role in that - has been engaged with early learning initiatives for years now", Burgess said, adding that it could only help the political momentum toward universal pre-K, as Seattle's preschool program is also once again on the ballot in November.

"Never have I been more comfortable at an Amazon board meeting!", Bezos' post read. We're going to be obsessively, compulsively focused on the child. We will build an organization to directly operate these preschools.

The Amazon founder, the world's wealthiest person, offered detail on his philanthropic goals, announcing the Bezos Day One Fund, which will begin with an initial $2 billion.
