Washington, Sep 8 (UNI) The former Trump adviser whose remarks in a London pub sparked the U.S. inquiry into possible collusion with Russian Federation has been sentenced to 14 days in jail, said a BBC News report.
Papadopoulos, the first campaign aide sentenced in special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation, said he was "deeply embarrassed and ashamed" for having lied to FBI agents during an interview a year ago and acknowledged that his actions could have hindered their work.
"I made a bad mistake for which I paid dearly and I am terribly ashamed", Papadopoulos said at his sentencing hearing.
Prosecutors sought a sentence of up to six months, while defense lawyers asked for probation.
In his pre-sentencing statement, Papadopoulos admitted lying to FBI investigators in January 2017 but said it had been out of a desire to protect his career and a naive loyalty to the Trump administration. He emphasized that Papadopoulos' lies to investigators came a week after Trump's inauguration, at a time when the onetime policy aide was seeking a senior role in the administration and the president had begun dismissing the Russian Federation investigation as a lie.
U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss said that Papadopoulos' deception was "not a noble lie" and that he had lied because he wanted a job in the Trump administration and didn't want to jeopardize that possibility by being tied to the Russian Federation investigation.
He "elevated his self-interest over the national interest", he said. Papadopoulos admitted that he lied to FBI investigators when they interviewed him. Mifsud left the United States and not returned, after the Federal Bureau of Investigation found him in the US on February 11, 2017, about two weeks after Papadopoulos' first interview.
"14 days for $28 MILLION - $2 MILLION a day, No Collusion. A great day for America!" tweeted the President. That probe was later taken over by Mueller.
Papadopoulos admitted past year that he lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about interactions in which people he thought were linked to the Russian government described Moscow having "thousands of emails" with damaging information about Clinton. Jeff Sessions taking an interest in a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The London-based professor, Joseph Misfud who told former Donald Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos that Russian Federation had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton is missing and he may be dead.
"The defendant did not provide "substantial assistance" " after that arrest, prosecutors wrote to the judge, "and much of the information provided by the defendant came only after the government confronted him".

Filings by lawyers to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) said Mifsud is missing and may be dead.
Outside court on Friday, Papadopoulos' lawyer, Thomas Breen, said his client was a "fool" and had acted "stupidly" in lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
He said Papadopoulos' deception required investigators to scour more than 100,000 emails and gigabytes of data to reconstruct the timeline of his contacts with Russians and Russian intermediaries. He explained why he told Greece's foreign minister about the Russian dirt and expanded on his belief Sessions was not honest in Congressional testimony a year ago. Papadopoulos lied to the FBI, Breen said, because he wanted to "keep his name in the hopper" for a position in the Trump administration.
"The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could".
Breen described his client as a "patriot", who wasn't trying to help Russian Federation.
Papadopoulos soon made contact with a mysterious Maltese academic, Joseph Mifsud. "I looked at candidate Trump directly in his eyes and said, 'I can do this for you if it's in your interest and if it's in the campaign's interest.' And the collective energy in the room, of course, there were some dissenters, but the collective energy in the room seem to be interested".
"As an influential foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign, Mr. Papadopoulos was informed that Russian Federation had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails" at a critical time during the campaign", Warner said.
That account conflicts with what Sessions, now attorney general, testified before Congress. He participated in four proffer sessions, they said, and "was willing to answer any questions posed". These emails burst into public view two months later with the first WikiLeaks releases.
Breen also rejected the idea that Papadopoulos was the victim of a witch hunt or prosecutorial misconduct. Weeks later, the stolen Clinton emails were posted online by what U.S. intelligence chiefs now say were Russian intelligence actors.
Asked if Papadopoulos still remained loyal to Trump, Breen smiled wryly and paused for a beat.
"We were hoping for no jail time but two weeks is OK", Maria Stamatopoulos said.
