A terrible run-out of Joe Root sparked an England collapse on day one of the first Test against India at Edgbaston.

Root was looking set to get a big one but a brilliant piece of fielding from Kohli saw the right-hander getting run-out for 80.

Left-arm pacer Sam Curran was pick of the English bowlers as he scalped four wickets and was ably supported by James Anderson and Ben Stokes who also picked two-two wickets each.

Reflecting on the English batting, which collapsed from 216 for 4 to 285 for 9 at the d draw of stumps, Jennings said the hosts missed an opportunity but can still make it up.

Cook's dismissal - bowled again by a fine delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin - leaves the game in the balance.

Kohli, who exorcised the ghosts of the 2014 England tour, brought up his hundred by hitting Stokes for a four and roaring towards the stands to then kiss his wedding ring as wife Anushka Sharma watched from the stands.

Trump blasts Koch brothers as 'a total joke'
Charles Koch has said he doesn't care if Democrats take back the House of Representatives in 2018. His younger brother, David Koch , retired from the company and network in June.

England along with Australia are the pioneers of Test cricket as both countries began playing in this format of the game from 1877.

But Kohli's superb 149 took the tourists to 274 all out, just 13 runs adrift of EnglandĀ“s 287.

Since his century, Kohli has been garnering praise from all over and Harbhajan also joined the bandwagon.

After Malan put down a tough one-handed chance at second slip, Kohli settled then targeted Curran, first clipping him through mid-wicket then angling him down to third man. A score of 54 for 2 - at which point Kohli had walked in - had become 100 for 5. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, added 91 runs.

England will hope Jos Buttler will be able to bat on Friday after he went to the hospital during the lunch interval for an X-ray on his left middle finger, which he injured while fielding. Karthik had dropped Curran on the opening day off the same bowler. India got off to a near ideal start with the opening duo of Murali Vijay (20) and Shikhar Dhawan (26) putting on a 50-run stand.

It didn't help matters that England lost an early review as Anderson's loud appeal was turned down, with DRS ruling in favour of the umpire's decision. In the morning, Curran had taken three wickets in the space of eight balls to reduce India to 76-3 at lunch.
