Police said that all 20 people on board the plane, including its three crew members, died.

The wreckage of the plane was in a basin at 2,450 meters (8,000 feet) above sea level surrounded on three sides by peaks, a Reuters witness said.

Police had not provided an official toll by late Sunday morning, but said that five helicopters were involved in a search and rescue mission and the airspace over the crash site was to remain closed until late Sunday.

Officials said 11 men and nine women were killed, most from Switzerland but also a couple and their son from Austria.

The vintage aircraft crashed into the Piz Segnas mountain in the Flims resort on Saturday.

According to JU-AIR, a Ju-52 airplane, which seats 17 passengers along with two pilots, had crashed.

Authorities are investigating what caused the deadly crash.

The veteran plane is operated by Ju-Air, a company based in Duebendorf, near Zurich, that offers panoramic flights with old-time Junker Ju-52 planes.

The plane that crashed had logged 10,187 hours of flying time, he said, adding that it underwent maintenance after every 35 hours of flight - most recently at the end of July.

The plane crashed in an inaccessible area of forest in the Rengg mountain pass in the canton of Nidwalden. He said it had its full annual service during the winter, and "we know of no technical problems with this aircraft".

The company, which operates two other Ju-52s, suspended flights until further notice after the crash.

JU-Air runs sightseeing tours on its squadron of German-made vintage aircraft.
