More than 100 aftershocks have rattled Lombok since the quake, which was also felt on the neighbouring island of Bali. "We can't dive, we can't do anything so we will go to another island", he said.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told Fairfax Media that he was on the hotel's 12th floor when the quake struck.

"Walls cracked, it was quite impossible to stand up", he said. Heard screams. Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking.

The island was already reeling from a magnitude 6.4 quake on July 29, which killed 16 people. "The lamp was shaking, and people were shouting 'Get out.' I ran out into the dark because the power cut off", AP quoted Harian, a Lombok woman who gave one name, as saying.

A joint search and rescue team was evacuating hundreds of tourists from three popular vacation islands off the northwest of Lombok.

Iwan Asmara, an official from the local Disaster Mitigation Agency, said people poured out from their houses in panic to move to higher ground, particularly in Mataram and North Lombok.

The Malaysian embassy says those in Lombok as well as students in Bali are safe following the natural disaster which hit yesterday evening.

The Indonesian archipelago, where Lombok and Bali are located, is a part of the Pacific Ring of Fire-an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity.

In 2014, a devastating tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea natural disaster off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.
