Israeli airforce targets militants in Syrian-held Golan Heights

UN peacekeepers return after 4 years to Israel-occupied Golan Heights near Syria Israel says Assad back in charge, Syrian front likely to be quieter

It makes sense for Israel to view the war that way from their perspective, bordering southern Syria.

He said the Russian presence there was temporary, and that the observation posts would be handed over to Syrian government forces once the situation stabilized.

The Jordanian army said on Thursday it had killed several Islamic State militants who approached its border as they fled a Syrian offensive that drove them out of their enclave in the southwest of the war-torn country.

Meanwhile, in a major change to the pre-conflict 2011 status quo, Russian military police began deploying alongside returning United Nations peacekeepers on the Syrian-held Golan and planned to set up eight observation posts in the area, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said.

A day before the joint Russia-U.N. patrols, Russian Federation announced it reached an agreement with Israel to keep pro-Iranian fighters 85 kilometers (53 miles) from the volatile frontier.

During their summit in Helsinki, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump said they were exploring ways to protect Israel from the war in Syria.

Israel has been blamed for previous attacks on a suspected Iranian military base in the el-Kisweh area. They didn't elaborate but later Putin said he agreed with Trump on securing Israel's border with Syria in line with the 1974 deal.

The Israeli broadcaster Hadeshot reported Monday night the Israeli government passed on the message to Putin via diplomatic channels but it remains to be seen if the Russians are willing to intervene when Assad cracks down on the refugees who are in majority opponents of the ruthless regime. He said a preliminary assessment was that the infiltrators were Islamic State militants.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his troops on Wednesday they were close to victory after inflicting a succession of defeats on rebels.

"The IDF remains, on high readiness, and levels of alert for any threats - be it in the air or on the ground - and we of course remain committed to defend Israeli citizens and Israeli sovereignty", Conricus told journalists.

A series of blistering offensives backed by Moscow and Tehran has forced the fighters out of many of their strongholds, putting Assad's regime back in control of almost two-thirds of the country.

As tensions peaked last week, Israel shot down a Syrian warplane that it said had strayed into the Israeli-occupied Golan and warned Assad's Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah reinforcements against trying to deploy on the Syrian-held side.
