Several men, believed to be pedophile "clients" of the couple, have also been prosecuted in connection with the case.

Berrin was sentenced to 12 years and six months by a court in Freiburg, while Christian, the boy's stepfather, was jailed for 12 years.

Diaz received a 10-year prison sentence for 14 counts of aggravated sexual assault, one count of rape and one count of bodily harm while making child pornography.

They were accused of having sexually assaulted the boy - who was nine when their trial began in June - as well as pimping him on the darknet for more than two years.

Six others are accused of being part of the paedophile ring in which the boy was abused.

The couple were found guilty of rape, sexual assault of children, forced prostitution and distribution of child pornography.

Lais, 39, had a previous conviction for child abuse, raising questions why he was allowed to live in a home with a child present.

Freiburg - A mother and her partner have been handed lengthy prison terms by a court in southern Germany for the years-long sexual abuse of the woman's child, whom they sold for sex with men on the dark net.

The couple also sexually abused a three-year-old girl in 2015.

He also made serious accusations against the child's 48-year-old mother, who confessed to the crimes but remained largely silent about any possible motive during the trial.

Video footage catalogued the horror of the boy's abuse, which included him being tied up and subjected to verbal humiliation.

The verdict against the mother and stepfather in the case, which police have called one of the most atrocious they have investigated, is expected on Tuesday.

The boy has been rehomed with a foster family, and will receive €42,500 (£38,000) in compensation from his mother and her partner, and €18,000 (£16,091) in compensation from Gonzalez Diaz.

Mr Bürgelin then said the abuse continued out of financial incentives.
