The crowns and royal orb had originally belonged to Sweden's King Karl IX and Queen Kristina, who ruled from 1604 to 1611.

A police spokesperson said it was possible they hightailed it into the region's hinterlands, or may have used a getaway auto to reach Stockholm itself.

Two suspects have been seen fleeing the cathedral on a motorboat and police are now hunting them in a major river chase.

Sweden's royal family still regularly captures Europe's attention with glamour, gossip - and the shiny crown jewels that are put on public display whenever the occasion merits it.

Swedish police said the stolen crown jewels are from the 1600s and were part of the funeral regalia of King Charles IX and his wife Queen Christina.

"The two men hurriedly jumped on board".

"It's 1-0 to them right now", police spokesman Thomas Agnevik said.

"I knew immediately they were burglars, because of the way they were behaving", he added. We have some different information about how exactly the boat looked.

An official with the Swedish police's National Operations Department told a local media outlet that she thought the stolen goods would be "impossible to sell" due to how unique and recognizable they were.

It was recovered several days later in a garbage bag left on a a countryside road, following an anonymous tip.

The stolen crown jewels were reportedly locked behind glass, and the cathedral was open to visitors at the time of the robbery.

The theft would be logged at Interpol, enabling an worldwide search, TT said.

"These are royal regalia that belong to the Kingdom of Sweden, totally unique objects that are of huge immaterial value", he told daily Dagens Nyheter.
