San Diego Gas and Electric says almost 1,700 customers are without power after the fire damaged the electric system. About 72 buildings have been destroyed, two injuries have been reported, and 2,354 fire personnel are battling the flames.

Evacuations were called for Hornbrook and the tiny community of Hilt.

He said numerous people he has talked to were either traveling or away for work when the blaze started Thursday and have not been able to find out the status of their homes.

Another wildfire in the San Bernardino National Forest was holding at 1.5 square miles and forced evacuation of about 700 homes in the mountain community of Forest Falls.

Video from news helicopters showed fire crews running along Interstate 8 and trying to quell the flames that were spreading along the side of the freeway. The fire quickly grew to about 1.5 square miles.
