Reactions to Trump's decision to nominate Brett Kavanaugh

Democrats' long-shot plan to stop Trump's Supreme Court pick Trump weighs top picks for Supreme Court amid last-minute maneuvering

The Pittsburgh-based federal appeals judge was the runner up to Justice Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court nomination previous year. She served with the Pennsylvania-based Hardiman on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit.

Kavanaugh was a favorite of some high-profile boosters, inside and outside the White House, but his stock has fallen off since Friday for a couple reasons: his ties to former President George W. Bush and the potential difficulty in getting him confirmed.

President Donald Trump will announce his nominee to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy tonight from the White House. Trump touted Kavanaugh as "a brilliant jurist" with "impeccable credentials" before inviting Kavanaugh to the podium, where the judge said he was "deeply honored" to be Trump's choice.

Kavanaugh served as a senior White House official under President George W Bush before Bush picked nominated him to the appeals court in 2003. "I'll interpret the law as written". Democratic senators running for re-election in states Trump carried in 2016 will face pressure to back his nominee.

In the short term, the bigger question is whether Kavanaugh can secure a majority of Senate votes in order to be confirmed.

Conservative Christians have long vied to overturn that decision, and Mr Trump has previously said he wants "pro-life" justices opposed to abortion rights.

If as expected Trump nominates someone firmly to the right, conservatives could dominate the court for years. In most of those cases, Collins supported a judicial nominee picked by a Democratic president whom her colleagues shunned.

The names of Kavanaugh and Gorsuch were on a list of judicial candidates deemed suitable by the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.

He is well-liked in the Senate and was personally recommended by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as a good choice to support the president's nominee prep for one-on-one sessions on Capitol Hill.

With McConnell leading the way in the Republican-controlled Senate, Trump is seeking to put his imprint on the federal judiciary for generations to come.

Kavanaugh made headlines recently when he backed the Trump administration in his dissent to a ruling that allowed an undocumented minor to receive an abortion.

Kavanaugh worked on the effort by Bush's campaign to halt the recount of votes in Florida in the disputed presidential election between Bush and Al Gore in 2000.

Two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME, are pro-abortion and have said they would vote against a candidate who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY speaks to reporters on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, March 2, 2017, about news reports of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' contact with Russia's ambassador to the United States during the presidential campaign.

Kavanaugh's nomination was met overall with cheers from conservatives but it wasn't unanimous. Three Democratic senators who voted for Gorsuch - Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia - are up for re-election IN states Trump won handily IN 2016. At the top of that list is abortion. Gorsuch restored the court's conservative majority. While he has yet to reveal his sentiments on the 1973 Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to abortion access, he was involved with a dispute over whether a pregnant migrant woman who was being held by immigration authorities could receive an abortion in 2017, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"The nominees share one basic characteristic — their hostility to progress that's been made in women, workers and civil rights as well as health and safety over the past several decades", she said.
