The statement rejected what it described as Washington's "gangster-like" demand for rapid nuclear disarmament.

The North's statement, coming so soon after Pompeo's trip, was sure to fuel growing skepticism in the USA over how serious Kim Jong Un is about giving up his nuclear arsenal.

Following two days of diplomatic talks in North Korea, Pompeo told reporters this morning that "a good deal of time" had been spent discussing a timeline for slowing down nuclear ambitions.

He had said progress was made during the talks. "If I paid attention to the press, I'd go nuts and I refuse to do that".

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) has accused Beijing of being behind Pyongyang's condemnation of recent talks with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, while handing out freakish threats to North Korea's leadership.

Pompeo explained after the talks that teams from both countries would continue discussions as the USA looks to see North Korea make good on its promises to denuclearize despite some resistance from the Kim regime.

She wouldn't characterize Friday's discussions beyond saying they addressed denuclearization and the repatriation of American remains, saying, "We expect them to live up to their commitments".

Mr Pompeo also sought to dispel suggestions the Trump administration had backed down from demanding the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantlement of the North's nuclear weapons.

However, Pompeo said the progress achieved thus far did not warrant any concessions.

While insisting again that the talks were moving forwards, he stressed that nothing had happened to merit a relaxation of the tough sanctions imposed on the North over its nuclear missile programme.

Pompeo responded in kind, "There are things that I have to clarify as well".

Speaking to members of the U.S. North Korea committed at last month's summit to the "immediate repatriation" of remains already identified, but that hasn't happened yet.

Yet three weeks later, the two sides were still divided on all the issues, including exactly what denuclearization means and how it might be verified.

The U.S. "came up only with its unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization, just calling for CVID, declaration and verification, all of which run counter to the spirit of the Singapore summit and talks", KCNA quoted a spokesman at the North's Foreign Ministry as saying. "The U.S. should make a serious consideration of whether the toleration of the headwind against the wills of the two top leaders would meet the aspirations and expectations of the world people as well as the interests of its country", the statement concluded.

Abraham Denmark, a senior defence official for East Asia under former President Barack Obama, said: "This is a rejection of U.S. demands for unilateral denuclearisation by North Korea, and a clear message that the United States will need to give up more to make progress". According to the report, North Korea may be intentionally trying to "deceive the U.S." by continuing these efforts in secret facilities.

Pompeo was asked about the CD earlier by a journalist accompanying him to North Korea; the secretary of state laughed but did not confirm or deny the report.

Trump agreed to halt the exercises during his summit with Kim.
