Faid's latest flight from prison came after two or three heavily armed men hijacked a helicopter and forced the pilot to fly to Faid's prison in Seine-et-Marne, near Paris, the French Interior Ministry said.

The ministry said an armed commando landed in a helicopter in the courtyard as the prisoner was in the visiting room of the prison.

Investigators are looking into whether Faid, who had been at the Reau prison since November, had inside help.

Faid briefly took four guards hostage with a pistol before escaping in a getaway vehicle but was recaptured six weeks later at a hotel on the outskirts of Paris. He said he didn't know who Faid was, even though he is a notorious figure in France who has also written a book on his life of crime. Faid and his accomplices are believed to have ditched the airplane and escaped by vehicle.

The crime took place when Faid's brother was visiting him.

Faid escaped on board a helicopter that landed in the prison's front courtyard, an area to which detainees reportedly have no access.

It was the second time he had escaped from a French prison - the last time he blasted his way out with hidden explosives.

A police manhunt has since been launched across the entire Paris region.

He was later released with no physical injuries.

Pensions and Pemex to figure in Lopez Obrador's Mexico plans
It is hard to see AMLO continuing his predecessors' security policies and anti-immigration efforts on Mexico's southern border. The effort, she said, would help reintegrate into society some of the estimated 600,000 Mexicans employed by drug cartels.

She said mobile phones, often used illicitly by convicts, would be jammed in French prisons from October.

Faid was in prison on charges of attempted robbery in 2010, which killed a female police officer.

A notorious French criminal is on the run after pulling off a brazen escape in a helicopter from a prison near Paris.

"Someone spotted this possible way out, and it could have been done using drones", Belloubet said. For this the court sentenced the repeat offender to 25 years imprisonment in April 2018.

Redoine Faid was in prison for armed robbery.

Almost 3,000 French police have been recruited to search for the criminal, who had escaped prison once before.

He was re-apprehended six weeks later at a Paris hotel and in 2017, he was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for that first jailbreak.

In the 1990s, Faid led a criminal gang involved in the armed robbery of banks and armoured vans transporting cash.

After arriving at the prison and freeing Faid, they took off for the suburb of Roissy northeast of Paris, where they then tried to set the helicopter on fire before fleeing by vehicle.
