Clippers DeAndre Jordan opts out of contract, becomes free agent

Dallas Mavericks Working On DeAndre Jordan Trade: Report Report: DeAndre Jordan opts out of deal with Clippers
Chelsea Rogers | 01 July, 2018, 14:09

Jordan has opted out of the final year of that contract he signed with LA in 2015, and the Mavericks intend to pursue him as an unrestricted free agent, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday. One of the more reliable players in the National Basketball Association, he played all 82 games three straight seasons, and owns the Los Angeles Clippers' record for consecutive games played with 322.

Dallas never meant to sign Jordan long-term, and he was fine with that.

In July 2015, he verbally agreed to join the Mavs on a four-year, $80 million contract during the moratorium period before contracts could be officially signed. Former teammate Blake Griffin and coach Doc Rivers were part of a contingent that went to his house and stayed with him until the deal was official.

If we had to bet, Jordan will likely take the big payday, and Dallas will finally have their man.

Ramona Shelburne: Paul George "Seems To Be Staying" In Oklahoma City
During one of Oklahoma City's trips to Los Angeles, Westbrook was asked if he felt that the season was a sales pitch to George. There had been much speculation leading up to the decision that George had been leaning toward re-signing with the Thunder.

Dallas reportedly had a strong interest in signing Lakers restricted free agent forward Julius Randle, but that would appear to be dead at this point.

Meanwhile, the Clippers will move on from the only center they have known since 2008. The team possesses two of the top six players in the league (Steph and KD), as well as stars like Klay Thompson and Draymond Green. "Whether it's via free agency, whether it's via a trade, you're constantly looking for ways to improve the roster".

The 6-foot-11 veteran became a free agent as of 12:01 p.m. ET on Sunday.

After not exercising his player option for the 2018-19 season, Jordan was able to explore the market once again to find a situation that made the best use of his talents.
