"Dawn leaves behind her family, including three children, and our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely hard time", Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, the head of UK Counter Terrorism Policing said.

London's Metropolitan Police said Dawn Sturgess, 44, passed away on Sunday in a hospital in Salisbury.

That afternoon, the 45-year-old man fell ill at the same address in Amesbury and was also hospitalised.

Basu said Rowley was still critically ill in hospital and that Sturgess' family had asked for privacy.

The Guardian is reporting that the woman exposed to the Russian nerve agent Novichok has died.

The Skripal attack took place in the city of Salisbury, just a few kilometres away from the site of the Amesbury poisoning incident.

The investigation into the nerve agent attacks is being led by Britain's Counter Terrorism Policing Network, and the police said around 100 detectives were working round the clock alongside colleagues from Wiltshire police.

Her death comes four months after the poisoning of.

Police suspect Rowley and Sturgess handled a discarded item from the first attack, though they have not determined for certain that the two cases are linked.

No one has been arrested for that attack but Britain has held Russian Federation responsible....

Russia, now hosting the soccer World Cup, has denied any involvement in the March incident and suggested the British security services carried out the attack to stoke anti-Moscow hysteria.

Prime Minister Theresa May said she was appalled and shocked by the death.

They spent weeks in critical condition, but have both been discharged from Salisbury District Hospital, the same hospital where Sturgess died.

"We are not in a position to say whether the nerve agent was from the same batch that the Skripals were exposed to".

Police said the investigation "into the attempted murders of the Skripals is ongoing as detectives continue to assess all the evidence available".

The new poisoning has frightened some residents who thought an extensive cleanup had removed the threat of any further Novichok exposure.

The British couple were believed to have become exposed to Novichok by handling a "contaminated item", with speculation that it could have been the container used to administer the nerve agent to the Skripals.

But he said health authorities continued to assert the risk to the public was low.

After the hospitalisation of Ms Sturgess and Mr Rowley, Mr Javid accused the Russian state of using Britain as a "dumping ground for poison".
