Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the disaster mitigation agency spokesman, posted on Twitter pictures of houses with collapsed roofs and walls.

Floods kill 10 in Myanmar Surging floodwaters have killed at least 10 people and forced tens of thousands from their homes across swathes of Myanmar, a government official said on Sunday as more heavy monsoon rain battered the region.

The natural disaster early Sunday killed 16 people, including an Indonesian student who was among the Mount Rinjani climbers.

One local trek organiser described how rocks rained down on two Spanish hikers and their guide as they were caught on a mountain trail.

"There are still 560 people trapped", said the head of Rinjani national park.

A rescue operation is now underway for the tourists trapped by landslides on Mount Rinjani, a Lombok volcano popular for hiking enthusiasts.

More than 38,000 people remained under evacuation orders on Sunday in and around the city of Redding, about 257 km north of the state capital Sacramento.

Nugroho said more than 1,000 houses were damaged in the quake that struck the vacation destination.

A 6.4 magnitude is strong enough to cause injuries and damage to buildings, but largely depends on how densely populated the affected area is.

The quake also triggered a large landslide from Mount Rinjani.

The Lombok quake struck at 6:47 a.m. (2247 GMT on Saturday) and was only 4.35 miles deep (7 km), a shallow depth that would have amplified its effect.

The death toll following the eruption now stands at 16, with more than 335 people injured as buildings collapsed.

More than 500 climbers including 21 from Malaysia are reportedly still stranded on the volcanic Mount Rinjani in East Lombok.

The country sits on the deadly "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and earthquake-prone fault lines circling the Pacific Ocean.

The latest natural disaster was on land and did not trigger any waves or tsunami but authorities issued a yellow alert, suggesting there was a possibility of casualties.

The island was hit with a severe aftershock measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale 30 minutes after the first quake.

In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 quake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
