From Dehradun to Dubai and from Chicago to Abu Dhabi, led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the world collectively performed yoga to celebrate the fourth International Yoga Day on Thursday.

Along with the Prime Minister, around 50,000 yoga enthusiasts kick-started India's International Yoga Day celebrations at Dehradun-based Forest Research Institute.

THE SURYAA hotel joined millions around the world by celebrating International Yoga Day to highlight the importance of healthy living and overall well-being.

The Chief Minister, along with Power Minister R K Singh participated at the state Yoga celebration in Raipur. While Narendra Modi performed yoga in Dehradun, leaders and politicians across the country hosted similar events. "It has become a powerful unifying force", he said.

It is hard to say just how many people practise yoga around the world today, although some estimate it could be up to around 200 to 300 million.

'Yoga is handsome because it is ancient yet modern, it is constant yet evolving. The theme for Yoga Day 2018 is "Yoga for Peace".

"Designed to help individuals build self-realisation, ease any suffering they may be experiencing and allow for a state of liberation, (yoga) is practised by the young and old without discriminating against gender, class or religion", UNESCO added in a tweet. It has the best of our past and presents and a ray of hope for our future.

Demonstration of yoga asanas were also performed by yoga students of the IGCC and other yoga institutes in Dhaka. Instead of further animosity, yoga assimilates.

Given that India has the world's second-largest population, Modi said the initiatives taken will take some years to show results but he is confident that "tangible results" will soon become visible.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka also celebrated Yoga day along with 10,000 participants at Bangabandhu National Stadium.

Yoga is an art which connects our soul, mind and body.

Other cities however held their yoga day earlier than June 21 - the longest day in the Northern Hemisphere - including in Paris, Seoul and in Durban, South Africa last weekend.

Yoga is a spiritual exercise that operates in the public domain, giving people of different tribes, ethnicities, race and gender a scope to adopt and adapt.

Modi is keen on portraying his physical prowess, last week posting on Twitter his morning yoga routine involving plodding around a tree and flexing over a boulder.
