US military forces in Korea have not received any direction to cease joint military drills, a spokesman said on Tuesday, after US President Donald Trump said war games would be ended amid talks with North Korea.

The presidential office said the measures were particularly needed at a time "when a variety of serious dialogues have been held between the North and the US for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and the establishment of relations".

Trump said sanctions will remain in place for now, but looks forward to lifting them, and added that he has refrained from imposing new sanctions amid the progress being made with North Korea.

The summit between the two leaders occurred on Monday evening United States time and Tuesday in Singapore, ending with Trump and Kim vowing to "denuke" North Korea. According to current reports, it ended amicably with the two shaking hands and smiling, though details of their plan still need to be hashed out.

Former Defense Secretary under President Barack Obama Leon Panetta says President Trump shouldn't give anything to North Korea until he sees what steps they are prepared to take to denuclearize.

"We in Australia, the Australian government is now assessing what we could offer in terms of expertise to assist in that verification process", Ms Bishop said.

The fact that Trump and Kim "can sit together and have equal talks has important and positive meaning, and is creating a new history", he said in the statement.

ACA challenge Trump won't defend
John McCain's dramatic "thumbs down" vote last July, the Trump administration has taken other steps that Obamacare advocates say weaken the law.

Trump told the press that he wants to "bring them (U.S. troops) back home", but that the issue is "not part of the equation right now". As long as Trump doesn't start getting any ideas from Kim, we're probably OK.

The meeting on Tuesday between the United States president and North Korea's leader, unthinkable until recent months and uncertain until June 1, is a high-stakes and politically risky venture into summit diplomacy by two unpredictable personalities who have famously exchanged personal insults and threats of war.

"At the same time, there needs to be a peace mechanism for the peninsula, to resolve North Korea's reasonable security concerns", he added.

"The Singapore summit statement is essentially aspirational: no definitions of denuclearisation, no timelines, no details as to verification", Haass said on Twitter.

But analysts warned there were still big challenges ahead, especially since the two sides failed to reach any specific agreement on dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapons - a threat on China's doorstep. Every time the survey has been conducted, the greatest support has been for "continue diplomatic efforts to get North Korea to suspend its nuclear program".

The troops and war games were not mentioned in the final summit document, which focused on security guarantees and a general commitment to denuclearization.
