Mr Trump said he believed Mr Kim wanted to bring North Korea "into the real world" and was hopeful of a major breakthrough at their planned meeting.

"I really think he wants to do something", the President added, speaking about the recent diplomatic efforts of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The U.S. had long demanded that North Korea free the men, Kim Dong-chul, Kim Hak-song and Tony Kim, who had been held on charges of espionage and "hostile acts".

Shortly before 3 a.m. the president and first lady boarded the medical plane on which the men had travelled and spent several minutes meeting with them privately.

The three boarded under their own steam, when most of the USA delegation had already got on the plane.

Trump has said he wants North Korea to completely shut down its nuclear weapons program.

Visiting US 7th Fleet commander Vice-Admiral Phillip Sawyer had told Singapore media in an interview on Thursday that "the region and the world is cautiously optimistic and hopeful of what will come out of this (the meeting)". They later gave the president a round of applause. The aircraft is parked before a large American flag suspended between two fire trucks.

In Seoul, South Korea's presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae, welcomed the announcement of the summit.

Trump tweeted Wednesday morning that they appeared to be "in good health".

The three Americans will soon be reunited with their families once they have achieved what military hospital officials call "an optimal period of decompression".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang twice to meet with Kim in recent months, in a precursor to the Trump-Kim meeting.

Given the high stakes of their meeting, one might expect a tenser, less inviting image. They were released as a goodwill gesture in the run up to the summit. "I said, 'Welcome home.' He said, 'God bless America, '" Hook said.

USA officials had looked at several sites other than Singapore for the historic meeting.

Now that the U.S. and North Korea plan to hold a summit to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, however, Trump's tone has changed.

Mr. Trump announced on Twitter.

"Singapore is pleased to host the meeting between President of the United States Donald J Trump and Democratic People's Republic of Korea State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong Un on 12 June 2018", MFA said in a statement. Their arrests were widely seen as politically motivated and had compounded the dire state of relations over the isolated nation's nuclear weapons.

Schumer said Trump's comments are not a good sign for Trump's ability to negotiate a tough agreement with North Korea in the upcoming negotiations, which are aimed at convincing Kim to end his nuclear weapons program.

On the tarmac, Trump thanked Kim for the return of the us citizens and said it was a sign that the talks with North Korea could be successful. "Missionary Kim Hak-sung has been released after being detained for one year in North Korea".

Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old American student who was detained in North Korea for 17 months, died in June 2017 after he was released by Kim's regime. The two men exchanged fiery rhetoric previous year over North Korea's attempts to build a nuclear weapon that could reach the United States but tensions have since calmed considerably. Warmbier's parents recently filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the North Korean government. "But just a word of caution, we're not there yet", King said.
