"The Nuclear Weapon Institute and other concerned institutions are taking technical measures for dismantling the northern nuclear test ground of the DPRK in order to ensure transparency of discontinuance of the nuclear test", said the announcement.

Punggye-ri, in the northeast of the country, has been the site of at least five of the six nuclear tests carried out over the past 12 years.

According to the agency, the ceremony will depend on weather conditions.

First, explosives will be used to collapse the tunnels, KCNA said. Then, after all entryways are shut, ground-level observation facilities and research centers will be removed.

"In parallel with dismantlement of the nuclear test ground, guards and researchers will be withdrawn and the surrounding area of the test ground be completely closed", it added.

Last week, US intelligence said the North Koreans had started pulling cables from the tunnels at their nuclear test site - a first step toward closing them down, CBS News' national security correspondent David Martin reported.

Kim had previously announced his intention to dismantle the site as negotiations begin over total denuclearization.

At a ruling party meeting last month, North Korea had already announced that it has suspended all tests of nuclear devices and ICBMs and the plan to close the nuclear testing ground.

Pompeo said there would need to be "complete" and "verifiable" denuclearization that would remove North Korea as a threat to the South, the United States and the rest of the world.

Pyongyang's pledge may open the way in which for airways to route flights by means of North Korean airspace.

Confirmation of the meeting between the two men came after landmark talks between North and South Korea.

Kim final 12 months oversaw a string of missile and nuclear tests, drawing the ire of the worldwide neighborhood.

Pompeo spoke to reporters on the State Division following his return from a visit to Pyongyang to barter with the North Korean chief and retrieve three Americans held by the regime.

Not only was it later revealed North Korea was secretly enriching uranium, but the rogue nation conducted its second nuclear test less than one year later in May 2009.

Trump's Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday North Korea can look forward to "a future brimming with peace and prosperity" if it agrees to quickly give up its nuclear weapons. "We talked about the fact that America has often in history had adversaries who we are now close partners with and our hope that we could achieve the same with respect to North Korea".

Mr Trump announced the date and place of the summit earlier this week, hours after he welcomed home three USA detainees released from North Korea.

It also arrives after historic summit of April between two Koreas.
