NASA Just Unveiled This Awesome, Tiny Helicopter That Will Cruise Over Mars

It is planned that NASA would send another expedition to Mars in July 2020 - red planet the ship will reach in February 2021.

NASA said on Friday it will ship a small helicopter into Mars as part of the shuttle agency's 2020 mission to set a next generation rover around the Martian surface, marking the first time that aircraft is going to be utilized on another environment.

The Mars Helicopter has been in development since August 2013 and contains solar cells to charge its lithium-ion batteries along with a heating mechanism, as temperatures during the Martian night regularly reach -67 F (-55 C), and can go even lower. The rover then will be driven away from the helicopter to a safe distance from which it will relay commands.

The Mars helicopter will not be manned, but it will operate autonomously, in a way similar to a flying drone here on Earth.

If Mars Helicopter works, it will constitute another space first for NASA, the first flight on another world.

A successful test could open the door to using helicopters as scouts on future missions, surveying terrain that might be hard for rovers to navigate and even accessing locations that are unreachable via ground travel.

Mars 2020 is scheduled now to launch sometime in July 2020 with a landing slated for February 2021.

The Mars Helicopter will bear no resemblance to the ones that hover nearly constantly in the skies above Los Angeles and tracking vehicle chases.

And many conservatives believe the Obama administration's Iran deal did far too little to forestall Iran's nuclear dreams. Trump has consistently been a harsh opponent of the Iran deal, calling it "the worst" and "defective at its core".

Once the rover is on the planet's surface, a suitable location will be found to deploy the helicopter down from the vehicle and place it onto the ground.

"The idea of a helicopter flying the skies of another planet is thrilling", he added.

On its first flight, the helicopter will make a short vertical climb to 10 feet and hover for about 30 sec.

Because the atmosphere on Mars is 100 times thinner than Earth's, the blades will spin at 3,000 revolutions per minute, which is about 10 times faster than the speed of helicopter blades on Earth.

The helicopter will have a relatively short mission, about 30 days in total.

The remote-controlled Mars Helicopter, created to take flight in the thin Martian atmosphere with twin counter-rotating blades, weighs about four pounds (1.8 kilograms), with a fuselage the size of a softball, NASA said.

Both projects are considered "high-risk, high-reward" technology demonstrations, meaning that neither of the two missions will be impacted if the CubeSats and the "marscopter" fail.

"The ability to see clearly what lies beyond the next hill is crucial for future explorers", according to Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.
