UK says foreign secretary Johnson to meet US VP Pence, discuss Iran, North Korea
07 May, 2018, 15:12
A top Republican on Sunday said it would be a mistake for President Donald Trump to abandon the Iran nuclear deal because it would diminish Washington's leverage over Tehran.
Mr Rouhani's comments come as the United States president decides whether to pull out of the deal by a 12 May deadline.
Even if Trump rejects a possible remedy being worked out by USA and European officials and decides to bring back sanctions, the most drastic US measures targeting Iran's oil sales will not immediately resume.
He warned Iran had "a plan to counter any decision Trump may take and we will confront it".
The 2015 Iran nuclear deal lifted crippling economic sanctions that had locked Iran out of worldwide banking and the global oil trade.
Ahead of his trip to Washington, Mr Johnson said: "On so numerous world's foreign policy challenges the United Kingdom and U.S. are in lockstep".
Iran's clerical rulers have repeatedly ruled out reducing its sway across the region, as demanded by the United States and its European allies.
Rejoining global markets and banking systems, and rebuilding its economy, were major incentives for Iran to give up its nuclear program. But Trump says the deal is far too weak to really constrain the country's nuclear ambitions.
Suspect in officer's death killed in shootout
The death of the police officer is the first of officer with the Terre Haute Police Department since July 11, 2011. She said she was on the scene of a homicide on South 18th Street related to this incident earlier on Friday.
Mr Trump must decide by 12 May whether to renew the waiver on sanctions, and has a wide range of options on whether to re-impose them.
They have been critical of what they call "a weak inspection regime" in place and the fact that the deal does not address Iran's ballistic missile abilities which it has continued to develop.
While in D.C., Johnson will meet for two days with Vice President Mike Pence and other senior Trump administration officials, including National Security Adviser John Bolton.
The deal "has to be either fully fixed or fully nixed", he said.
"Our nation honors its commitments, but it plainly tells the whole world, Europe, America, West and East: We will not negotiate our weapons and defense of our country with anybody", Rouhani said. Another important thing for Europe is that the global financial system is so interconnected and so tied to NY that it would be nearly impossible for anyone anywhere in the world to continue their business with Iran without risk of violating USA sanctions.
Britain, Germany, France, Russia, and China also signed the accord and have urged Washington to remain in the deal, although the Western allies have expressed concerns as well about some of the terms.
Meanwhile, those who want to fix the deal, believe that Netanyahu's speech will convince Europe over making a concrete agreement with Trump.
Netanyahu said that the deal was "fatally flawed on weaponisation", referring to the military application of Iran's enriched uranium, and that the documents proved it was based on a lie. Rouhani continued: "You (US) should know that you can not threaten this great nation because our people withstood eight years of defense (in the war with Iraq)".
