"We will search this evening for ways to keep the Iran deal alive without the United States", Maas said.

"We know it's a hard task but we are determined to do it and we have started to work to put in place measures that help ensure this happens", she told reporters.

The deal, painstakingly negotiated over more than a decade, lifted punishing economic sanctions on Iran in return for it abandoning its nuclear ambitions.

"I'm not the national security decision maker", Bolton said, adding that Trump "makes the decision and the advice that I give him is between us".

Trump has said the USA would be reinstating the anti-Iran bans lifted under the JCPOA and also slapping the "highest level" of economic sanctions on Tehran, prompting anger among other parties to the Iran deal, which unanimously denounced Washington and vowed to stay committed to their side of the deal.

Pompeo said he was "hopeful in the days and weeks ahead we can come up with a deal that really works, that really protects the world from Iranian bad behaviour, not just their nuclear program, but their missiles and their malign behaviour as well".

She said she would brief the weekly meeting of the College of the European Commission on Wedneday morning and address European leaders about the results of Tuesday's talks on Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day, the press Secretary of the Iranian government, Mohammad Bagher Nobakht, said that his country will resume uranium enrichment if the way is found to preserve a "nuclear deal".

"It's not yet clear to us or to Europe what that means in respect of existing export levels in the eyes of the United States", Mr Parker said.

"If we want to save this deal, which is not an easy exercise, we know that the sooner we do it then the easier it will be", Mogherini said after meeting the foreign ministers of the UK, France, Germany and Iran in Brussels.

At the same time, the European diplomats wanted to show they weren't gullible and wouldn't drop other divisive issues with Tehran, including its role in the Syria conflict.

Iran's nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted by Fars news agency as saying he was not optimistic on the prospects of the talks with the Europeans. "We are on the right path to move forward", he said.

She and other European power will meet again in Vienna next week.

European diplomats acknowledged that the EU support, however honest, risked looking hollow after Trump reimposed an array of wide sanctions last week on Iran that will hit European companies investing there.

"We have to accept, be realistic about the electrified rail, the live wire of American extraterritoriality and how that can serve as a deterrent to businesses", Johnson said.

Mr Zarif also discussed the agreement with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on Monday.

European commissioners will discuss sanctions-blocking measures today (16 May), opening the way for European leaders to discuss the issue at a summit in Sofia in the eveneing.

The regulation, which has been brandished as a threat in the past but never used, was drawn up more than 20 years ago and would have to be revised. They might help shield European businesses from USA penalties but have never been used.

Russian Federation and Iran also sought to strengthen their business ties long before the 2015 agreement, despite worldwide sanctions in place.
