At least six Indian nationals were abducted by unknown armed men in Baghlan province of Afghanistan on Sunday, media reports said.

The engineers were travelling to a government-run power station in a minibus when they and their Afghan driver were stopped and abducted, Baghlan police spokesman Zabihullah Shuja said.

Although the Taliban spokesperson told the Times of India that they have no update about the abduction, the police officials claimed that they have been told by the group that the Indians are being held by them.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in the eastern city of Khost.

The foreign ministry in New Delhi said it was in touch with Afghan authorities and was ascertaining details of the incident.

India's opening match is against Thailand as UAE and Bahrain will face each other in the tournament opener. The finals will kick off on January 5 with the final to be played in Abu Dhabi on February 1.

"We are working out ways to ensure the release of our engineers", an Indian official said, the news agency reported.

Pakistan has strongly condemned the terrorist attack at a voter registration centre in a mosque in Afghanistan's Khost province that killed and injured dozens earlier on Sunday. But both the Taliban and a local affiliate of the Islamic State militant group reject democratic elections and have targeted them in the past.

According to Afghan officials, the Taliban apparently mistook them for government employees. Neither had an exact figure for casualties.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a vehicle carrying shopkeepers on their way to a market struck a roadside bomb in Afghanistan's northern Faryab province, killing seven of them.

The Taliban and it is have found a constant tide of attacks since the onset of year, murdering scores of civilians from the capital, Kabul, and also elsewhere.
