It added that the products had been pulled from the Chinese market and destroyed.

The US retailer store has said its apology that it would implement "rigorous reviews" to prevent such things from happening again.

Gap took action after photos began circulating on the Chinese social media site Weibo of a T-shirt with a map that did not include Taiwan, a self-ruled island that Beijing regards as Chinese territory. As stated by the user, the photograph of the T-shirt was taken at an outlet store in Canada.

United States retail giant, Gap has issued an apology after selling a T-shirt displaying the wrong map of China after the design omitted Chinese-claimed territories including islands in the South China Sea, Taiwan and south Tibet.

"We are terribly sorry for this unintentional mistake".

The Gap map also did not reflect Chinese claims to territory in the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China refers to as "Southern Tibet", or show its claims in the South China Sea, which overlap with those of several other countries in the region.

Australia probes claim Google harvests data, consumers pay
With more than ten million Australians using Android phones, they could be paying $580 million in unnecessary fees every year. He added that one could choose not to opt in to location sharing and claimed Oracle's presentation was "sleight of hand".

But this isn't the first time an worldwide company has found itself in hot water over China territorial issues.

Beijing considers Taiwan, which is self-governed, an integral part of China and becomes highly upset when anything to the contrary is suggested.

The government has lodged a protest against a change of its designation to "Taiwan, China" on the website of Air Canada, the country's flag carrier and largest airline, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.

U.S. airline Delta (DAL) and European clothing retailer Zara also came under fire over similar issues on their websites in China.

The name change came in the wake of letters sent by China's Civil Aviation Administration in late April, pressuring 36 American and worldwide airlines to remove references to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as countries on their websites and marketing materials.

In January, Chinese authorities blocked Marriott's websites and apps for nearly a week after the company listed Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separate countries in emails and applications.
