Goodall "died peacefully" in Basel, tweeted Nitschke, of Exit International, the organisation which helped Goodall take his own life. "I'm looking forward to it", he said of his imminent death. What is sad is if one is prevented.

"If they really want to make sure they get the best drugs and they don't want to have a failure and they've got enough money and they don't mind dying in a foreign country and they don't want to break the law, sometimes Switzerland becomes an appealing choice".

He would not have met the criteria for assisting dying laws for the terminally ill recently passed in Victoria and under consideration in other states.

He had traveled to Switzerland from his home in Perth, in Western Australia, because he wanted to die by assisted suicide, which is not allowed in Australia, but is in Switzerland.

"What is the age at which we no longer celebrate people continuing life?" he asked.

"My abilities have been in decline over the past year or two, my eyesight over the past six years. My feeling is that an old person like myself should have full citizenship rights including the right of assisted suicide". The incident gained worldwide media attention, with Goodall, then 102, calling it ageism in the workplace.

University officials later reversed their decision.

He said he was happy to have the chance to end his life but would rather do it in Australia.

The turning point for him seemed to be a fall in his one-bedroom flat.

"Luckily my family who are in various parts of Europe and America have rallied round and come to see me, and I welcome the opportunity to see them, which I probably wouldn't have had if I hadn't pursued this Swiss option", he told journalists.

However, the Australian Medical Association's president, Dr Michael Gannon, says he was concerned that the "suicide of someone who's aged 100" was being celebrated. "What's the use of that?" said the scientist, who appeared to have lost none of his sense of humor on Tuesday, wearing a top inscribed with the words "Aging Disgracefully".

In the end, Goodall said, he would like to be remembered "as an instrument of freeing the elderly" to choose their own death.

Professor David Goodall at a press conference on May 9, where he discussed his death plan with reporters.

Goodall said he hoped his story would lead to the legalization of assisted dying in other countries.
