They said the search operation has been called off and security forces have been withdrawn from the area as the militants have managed to escape.

An encounter began between security forces and militants in Khudwani area of J&K's Kulgam district in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police said that in ongoing encounter at Khudwani area of Kulgam.One Army personnel identified as Sepoy S. Gunakar Roy No. 16121860/K who was injured in the gunfight succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom.

The security forces fired back in a bid to capture the militants, said to be linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). After initial exchange of fire, the operation was halted till dawn while all arrangements were put in place to prevent militants from escaping.

Official sources told GNS, that police have sent a communication to the cellular companies wherein they have directed them to snap down the mobile internet data in Pulwama, Shopian and Awantipora with immediate effect.

They said security forces blasted the house from where the militants were firing at them following which the firing stopped.

These facilities include retail stores, offices, data centres and co-located premises in 43 countries such as the USA , UK, China and India.

One civilian, identified as Sartaj Ahmad Ganie of Khudwani, Kulgam, received critical injuries during the clashes near encounter site.

As the news about civilian killings spread, clashes erupted in various parts of the Valley, reports said. The operation, which was launched last night, is underway.

The nuclear-armed South Asian rivals have fought two of their three wars over the divided Himalayan region. Another injured person is 25-year-old Adil Ahmad from Anantnag. Another civilian is seriously injured.

Students in several colleges and universities carried out protests shouting pro-freedom slogans. The Joint Resistance Leadership called a Valley wide shutdown against the killings.

The encounter in Kulgam today comes days after the Indian forces successfully neutralized a total of 13 Hizbul Mujahideen militants in a spree of encounters conducted on April 1.
