Apple has been ordered to pay $500 million in iMessage patent suit

Apple forced to pay troll VirnetX shares surge as jury says Apple infringed patents: report

A federal jury in East Texas has found that Apple is guilty of infringing secure communications patents belonging to VirnetX Holding Corp., a notorious patent troll that has been battling Apple in court for almost eight years now.

The Texas-based jury found that Apple infringed on VirnetX's patents for secure communications when creating FaceTime, VPN on Demand, and iMessage. The legal battle has been protracted, and it involves multiple lawsuits and a dizzying number of appeals.

VirnetX is a patent-assertion entity, meaning its entire business model rests exclusively on suing companies that actually develop and sell products based on arcane patent infringement laws and loose interpretations of intellectual property regulations. The company is what's known within the industry as a 'patent troll'. The case seemed to have been filed again in 2012 and was won by the patent troll, after which Apple had to pay almost United States dollars 368 million.

Spotify launches $12.99-per-month bundle with Hulu in the US
That's significantly higher than the student deal, which offered the same bundle for the disruptive price of $4.99 per month. Spotify said the student offer was "incredibly well received". "The basic package is $9.99 a month".

Reports claim that the legal battle between Apple includes many legal suits and a myriad number of appeals. Even so, there was still a major difference there, Apple and Samsung both use their patents in products that they make and sell, while VirtnetX focuses on court cases to bring in revenue. But if that ruling stands, the newest victory will be short-lived. Later on, the company was ordered by the district court to pay more than United States dollars 400 million as damages to the patent-holding company VirnetX for copyright violations.

While VirnetX won, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) may end up having the final say in this outcome. "The evidence was clear", Kendall Larsen said to reporters following the announcement of the verdict.
