Lucknow/Patna: Voting for bypolls to three Lok Sabha and two Assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar took place on Sunday with a drop of around 11 per cent in the turnout in Uttar Pradesh's prestigious Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats.

By-elections are also being conducted on Sunday at Phulpur, the constituency that was earlier represented by UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya.

In Gorakhpur, the lowest voter turnout of 33 per cent was in Gorakhpur city, and the highest 47 per cent in Sahjanwa and Campierganj.

Kaushalendra Singh Patel from the BJP, Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel from SP and Manish Mishra from Congress are contesting from the Phulpur seat.

Phulpur, once represented by the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, witnessed a saffron surge in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and Maurya won there.

After casting his vote in Gorakhpur, Mr Adityanath said the BJP was getting widespread support from the people.

The bypolls are being seen as a litmus test for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after he pulled out of the state's grand alliance and joined the BJP. Taking a jibe at the SP-BSP tie-up, the minister said, "Their (SP-BSP) votes will be transferred only when they have enough votes".

JP Nadda all set to be elected to Rajya Sabha
As per the schedule, if needed be, polling will be held on 23 March while all processes of election will be completed by 26 March. Later, celebrations broke out at the party office as party activists made a beeline to congratulate the Rajya Sabha candidates.

Election officers said by midday the number of voters increased and voting was peaceful. "The state has suffered the negative consequences of SP and BSP governments", he said.

In Gorakhpur seat, the main contenders are Upendra Shukla from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Praveen Nishad from Samajwadi Party (SP) and Surhita Chatterjee Karim from Congress. You can say that this seat is important because it has a sizeable population of Dalit voters, the Congress has put up Shambhu Patel, banking on the popularity of former Lok Sabha speaker and Dalit leader Meira Kumar.

By 12 noon, 31.25 percent voter turnout was recorded in Bihar's Araria constituency, 24.5 percent in Bhabhua and 28.6 percent in Jahanabad. The BSP vote bank has shifted to BJP and it will vote for BJP candidates,"Maurya claimed".

"The people know that development is the only panacea", he told reporters there.

The low turnout will cause wrinkles on the foreheads of leaders and strategists of all political parties as the lack of enthusiasm among voters now can make things hard if it stretches till the general elections next year.

The RJD is trying to retain its Jehanabad seat which fell vacant after the death of its MLA Mundrika Singh Yadav.
