SF Defiant As Ever After Jeff Sessions Sues California

"How dare you?" Sessions said of Schaaf at a California Peace Officers Association meeting in Sacramento.

The speech came one day after the Trump administration sued California over state laws that protect its population of undocumented immigrants.

Things were kicked up a notch when Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf warned her residents that Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids were coming.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Wednesday he will "use every power I have to stop" California from impeding federal immigration officers.

Sessions said, "How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of law enforcement just to promote your radical open borders agenda?"

"California has enacted a number of laws created to intentionally obstruct the work of our sworn immigration enforcement officers - to intentionally use every power it has to undermine duly-established immigration law in America", he added.

Sessions criticized Mayor Libby Schaaf in a speech Wednesday to law enforcement officials after he sued California over laws that restrict cooperation with US immigration authorities. This announcement comes a week after ICE agents arrested more than 230 undocumented people throughout California. Governor Jerry Brown has called Sessions's move an effort to "further divide and polarize America" at a time of great political stress. Our statutes are in compliance with federal law. Pro Tem Kevin de Leon called Sessions' policies "white nationalism and white supremacy".

Brown's signature means that police will be barred from asking people about their immigration status or participating in immigration enforcement activities starting January 1. "Immigration law is the province of the federal government", he said.

Meanwhile, California officials are prepared to fight back and hold their stance against Trump's decidedly anti-immigrant policies.

This isn't the first time the Trump administration has attempted to attack Sanctuary states and cities.

"This is basically going to war against the state of California, the engine of the American economy", Brown said.

"So here's my message to Mayor Schaaf", Sessions added. Those who have outstanding orders of deportation, or who returned to the USA after being deported, are subject to immediate removal from the country, said the agency in a press statement, adding that the remaining individuals are in ICE custody awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge, or pending travel arrangements for removal in the near future. Brown said he hoped to have a "rational discussion" with U.S. Department of Justice officials once Sessions' "circus" left Sacramento.

State Sen. Steve Glazer, a Democrat from the San Francisco Bay Area who voted for the three bills being challenged by Sessions, told Courthouse News the visit was a "poke in the eye" with all the makings of a political stunt.

"Her actions support those who flout that law, and boldly validates illegality".

Brown speculated that Sessions' dig on California may be an attempt to ease an openly rocky relationship with the president, saying, "Maybe he's trying to keep his job because the president is not too happy with him".

The other two laws restrict private employers' cooperation with immigration officials and require inspections and reviews of immigrant detention facilities in the state.

"Those are 800 wanted criminals that are now at large in that community - 800 wanted criminals that ICE will now have to pursue by other means, with more difficulty in unsafe situations - all because of one irresponsible action", Sessions said.

Dozens of demonstrators have gathered in Sacramento, California, to protest an appearance by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
