'Ireland first' in all negotiations between United Kingdom and European Union, insists Tusk

BRITAIN-EU-POLITICS-BREXIT Fox Threats of punishment are “not the language of a club but the language of a gang

The European Union offered Britain "solidarity" yesterday after London accused Russian Federation of a nerve agent attack on British soil, but held off any threat of new sanctions as Prime Minister Theresa May considers her own response.

"I could not agree more".

Heckled by eurosceptic British MEPs while he was speaking, Juncker told them a time would come when "you will regret your decision" to leave the bloc.

Barnier meanwhile said a whole range of options for third-country cooperation were on the table - the European Union has previously cited trade deals of the type it has with Canada and South Korea.

"We need to receive specific proposals from the U.K.", Juncker told a plenary session of the Parliament in Strasbourg during a speech to MEPs in which he repeated his demand for "clarity" from the British government.

At the time the Prime Minister called for a "collaborative, objective framework that is reciprocal, mutually agreed and permanent", and promised "binding commitments".

She also rejected any suggestion that Ulster would remain locked into the European Union economically, leading to a customs border between it and the rest of the United Kingdom in the Irish Sea.

The EU has consistently said since the June 2016 referendum that it's not looking to punish Britain for its vote and is working to get a deal on the future relationship that works for both sides but which is consistent with its rules.

The European commission president has warned Theresa May that Brussels urgently needs her "broad suggestions" on the UK's post-Brexit relationship with the EU to be turned into workable solutions.

He also seized on the Irish border issue, saying the United Kingdom must put forward proposals on how to avoid a hard border, although he added it was a "European issue" not just an "Irish issue".

"I fully respect the Chancellor's competence in defining what is in the UK's interest but he must allow us to define what is in the EU's interest", he said.

The UK will leave the single market and things are going to be different in the future, but the UK will not take part in a regulatory race to the bottom at the expense of workers' rights or the environment. "For us this is not an Irish issue".

He recently said in an interview that "sceptics" to such a deal were wrong, and that it would be "in our mutual interest" to establish a free trade agreement when Britain leaves the European Union next year.

An association agreement would give "a vision, an architecture" to post-Brexit relations and avoid a repetition of the complex web of individual agreements the European Union has with Switzerland.
