In a freakish media blitz conducted throughout Monday, a Jewish former aide to Donald Trump said he will refuse to cooperate with US Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"Let him arrest me", Nunberg told the Post, declaring that he plans to defy the subpoena and corresponding requests to hand over emails and text messages related to the Trump campaign and communications with current and former Trump advisers, including Roger Stone, Carter Page, and Steve Bannon. "But I don't know that for sure".

"I think it would be really, really amusing if they wanted to arrest me because I don't want to spend 80 hours going over emails", he told MSNBC.

Then, when speaking to Erin Burnett on CNN, Burnett told Nunberg she smelled alcohol on his breath.

Republican strategist Mike Murphy on Monday made his contribution to "Russia speculation night", telling NBC's Lawrence O'Donnell an "international businessman" said special counsel Robert Mueller is looking into an agreement Donald Trump had with Russian interests during the 2016 campaign. In two jaw-dropping interviews that stunned the political world (and probably Nunberg's lawyer), Nunberg, who was sacked by the Trump campaign in August 2015, revealed he had no plans to cooperate with Mueller - a stunt that will most likely end up with him in jail.

He was sacked from the Trump campaign after Business Insider published a story about racially charged Facebook posts he had made.

Nunberg's series of interviews Monday raised concerns among some of his friends and acquaintances who described the salvo as a very public meltdown.

It is unclear what actions Mueller would take if Nunberg does not appear in front of the grand jury.

NUNBERG: No. And Jake, I've watched your news reports - you know, you know it's not true.

Nunberg also said that he did not want to spend what he predicted would be "80 hours" searching for his communications.

"Sam's his own man", Stone said of Nunberg's weird behavior.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said again Monday that Trump is cooperating with Mueller's inquiry, but she rebuffed questions about Nunberg.

It is unclear what actions Mueller might take if Nunberg does not appear.

During his interview with Tapper, Nunberg said: "I think Mueller has enough on Trump".

"I'm happy if the scope changes", he said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders blasted Nunberg on Monday and refuted any suggestion that the campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

Nunberg said he was ultimately swayed by the points some of the interviewers and TV guests he spoke with on Monday raised, notably former USA attorney Barbara McQuade, who warned Nunberg on MSNBC he could be charged with contempt.

He called the subpoena "ridiculous". "It is the biggest joke to ever think that Donald Trump colluded with the Russians", said Mr Nunberg.

By halfway through his media tour, Russian manipulation of USA democracy was less of an intriguing question - he backtracked - than what the heck was wrong with Sam Nunberg? Laughing, he said that "my lawyer is about to dump me right now".

"He's too smart for that, he didn't want it", said Nunberg of the president.

"I think it would be really, really amusing if they wanted to arrest me", he said. "Here's a guy that Donald Trump hired and fired twice because of what Donald Trump felt was incompetent professional work for Trump".
