In a civil lawsuit filed in January in San Mateo Superior Court, plaintiff Arne Wilberg contended that he was an exemplary employee who received positive performance evaluations "until he began opposing illegal hiring and recruiting practices at Google". Wilberg's lawsuit claims that YouTube recruiters were told to cancel interviews with applicants that weren't female, black or Hispanic and to "purge entirely" any applications that did not fit those criteria. Wilberg stated that previous year and in 2016, he and other recruiters were told to approve or dismiss candidates based exclusively on whether they were women, black or Latino.

Lawsuits against the Silicon Valley companies are on the rise as ex-employees come out to speak about the harmful and discriminatory culture prevailing at some of the biggest organizations.

Google, Wilberg's complaint claimed, "has had and implemented clear and irrefutable policies, memorialized in writing and consistently implemented in practice, of systematically discriminating in favor job applicants who are Hispanic, African American, or female, and against Caucasian and Asian men".

According to Wilberg, Google seems to prioritize diversity in its workforce over competence, alleging that he was sacked as a result of his complaints to managers in which he states the company's "illegal and discriminatory hiring practices", pointing to management deleting emails that held content regarding various supposedly clandestine hiring choices. Thursday, Arne Wilberg, a former technical recruiter in Google's YouTube unit, filed suit, alleging that YouTube illegally used quotas as recently as a year ago in an attempt to hire more black, Latinx, and female engineers.

Last month, Tim Chevalier, an ex-software developer at Google, also filed a lawsuit claiming that the company fired him over pro-diversity posts circulated internally. Exhibits in the complaint include a screenshot of an internal document where recruiters tracked diversity goals for women and minorities, as well as two emails where a hiring manager instructed the recruiting team to "only consider" candidates from "historically underrepresented groups".

The Google diversity hiring wars rage on. Both federal and California anti-discrimination laws prohibit employers from making hiring decisions based on race or gender. "We have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity", she said in a statement. In another encounter, Wilberg recalls, "One team member complained that managers were speaking about blacks like they were objects". It's alleged the company instigated a policy to further workforce diversity.

Google spokesperson Gina Scigliano said the company plans to vigorously defend this lawsuit. Wilberg says he complained about the practices and was ultimately fired in November.
