The Eagles are now projected to be about $14 million over the National Football League salary cap of $177.2 million and need to reach that figure on Wednesday.

There was a much-discussed scenario in recent weeks that Torrey Smith would be released by the Philadelphia Eagles and then be in position to return to the wide receiver-needy Ravens as a free agent.

Instead of just moving on from wide receiver Torrey Smith, the Birds chose to send him to the Carolina Panthers for cornerback depth in Daryl Worley.

CDC report: Hospital visits for opioid overdoses rose 30 percent nationwide
The report noted the central role of state and local health departments in coordinating responses to opioid overdoses. In the first nine months of 2017, the state had 609 opioid deaths, a 5 percent decrease from the same period in 2016.

Like with the Eagles' trade with Seattle for defensive end Michael Bennett earlier in the week, the deal will not become official until the start of the new league year on Wednesday. The Panthers will assume the final two years of Smith's deal at $5 million per season. According to ESPN.com, Worley's base salary is $650,000. Smith had five catches for 49 yards in Philly's 41-33 victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl LII and totaled 15 catches, 157 yards and a score in the postseason. He played for West Virginia, where he was a teammate of Eagles cornerback Rasul Douglas. He started 25 games during the past two seasons, including 14 a year ago. Worley is also a Philadelphia native who has three interceptions and two sacks the last two seasons.

Worley will join fellow corners Sidney Jones, Ronald Darby, and Jalen Mills fighting for playing time.

Unfortunately, it looks like Smith's time in the City of Brotherly Love will end up being a one-and-done situation after the Eagles made a decision to trade the wideout to the Carolina Panthers.
