CDC Reports ER Visits For Opioid Overdoses Just Jumped 30 Percent

PA opioid overdose emergency room visits spiked 81 percent Opioid crisis: overdoses increased by a third across US in 14 months, says CDC
Alonzo Parks | 09 March, 2018, 09:51

Overdoses increased in nearly every state, with the Midwest seeing a particularly steep 70 percent rise between July 2016 and September 2017.

Emergency rooms around the country saw a spike in patients overdosing on opioids previous year, according to data collected by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and released Tuesday.

The report claims that opioid overdoses and deaths can be prevented by providing medication-assisted treatment, naloxone (an overdose-reversing drug), treatment and referral services to people suffering from opioid use disorder, and coordinating efforts with other health departments, mental health care providers, community-based organizations and law enforcement.

"Long before we receive data from death certificates, emergency department data can point to alarming increases in opioid overdoses", CDC Acting Director Dr. Anne Schuchat explained in a statement.

"We saw, tragically, that in each locale, in each age gathering of grown-ups, in the two men and ladies, overdoses from opioids are expanding", Schuchat says.

Major metropolitan areas shouldered the brunt of overdose spikes: Large cities in the 16 states surveyed saw a 54 percent increase in ER visits.

TUESDAY, March 6, 2018 America's opioid epidemic is escalating at breakneck speed, with tens of thousands of overdose victims spilling into the nation's emergency rooms seeking lifesaving treatment, a new government report shows. No region or demographic group was spared, and two states - Wisconsin and DE - saw overdose visits to their emergency rooms more than double. It included 142,557 visits that were suspected opioid overdose cases, a 29.7% hike from the previous 1-year period.

For example, overdoses increased 105 percent in DE, compared with 80.6 percent in Pennsylvania and 34 percent in Maine.

The largest drop was in Kentucky, where overdose ED visits declined by 15%. There were 45 heroin-related deaths and 66 overdoses from opioids. "It is rare for a person to die due to the accidental overdose of a single drug", East Baton Rouge Parish's Coroner William "Beau" Clark wrote in his report. "Increases in opioid overdoses varied by region and urbanization level, indicating a need for localized responses". Schuchat blames the increase on newer, more potent opioids like fentanyl flooding into some parts of the country faster than others.

"We know that up to 90 percent of people will relapse in the first year going through rehab", he said. Overall as a nation, we are still failing to adequately respond to the opiate addiction epidemic. "So we take the time that we have with those patients very seriously and we try to maximize what we can for them both in the Emergency Department and how we hook them up with treatment". And just last week, he held a high-profile summit on the epidemic at the White House. The surgeon general, Jerome Adams, said: "Addiction is a chronic disease, and not a moral failing". Jessica Hulsey Nickel heads the Addiction Policy Forum.

STEIN: Too often, she says, addicts are simply revived and sent home only to overdose again.
