Rubio, a Florida Republican, was questioned Wednesday about arming teachers by Ashley Kurth, who teaches at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, where 17 students and teachers were killed in a shooting last week.

But some leading Republicans already are speaking out against the idea of arming teachers, which also was proposed by President Donald Trump this week.

The president had invited the teen survivors of school violence and parents of murdered children in a show of his resolve against gun violence in the wake of last week's shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and in past years at schools in CT and Colorado. "You've had your time, please return to fifth period", was said a few times but the students exited the confines of the school fence instead and began to march on the sidewalk surrounding the building.

State lawmakers, facing pressure from angry students, have signaled they will boost security funding after failing to do so for years.

Rubio was confronted at one point during the meeting by Frank Guttenberg, whose 14-year-old daughter Jaime Guttenberg was killed.

"I support banning weapons that fire off 150 rounds in seven or eight minutes, weapons that are weapons of war, that serve no objective other than killing the maximum number of people they can, you bet I am", Deutch said.

Guttenberg told Rubio that his comments about the shooting "and those of your president this week have been pathetically weak".

At a separate event Wednesday in South Florida, CNN's Jake Tapper moderated a town hall for students, parents and teachers to speak to Senators Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio and Rep. Ted Deutch.

However, Trump said he was the "biggest believer" in the Second Amendment and reiterated his recommendation to call for arming teachers with concealed weapons on US campuses.

Trump says on Twitter Thursday: "What many people don't understand, or don't want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots".

NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch was asked what the group was doing to prevent more school shootings. State Sen. Bill Galvano, a Bradenton Republican who is line to be Senate president, has praised the Sentinel program and says he plans to incorporate it into the gun bill he's negotiating with the House.

Loesch said the system to buy firearms is flawed as some in the crowd yelled, "You're a murderer".

It was to be Jean and Leighton Ford's last visit with Billy Graham - her older brother, his brother-in-law and fellow evangelist. Bush, who once said that a private meeting with Graham in 1985 helped him quit drinking.

Kimberly Snead says she yelled at him and "really wanted to strangle him more than anything". Trump says he also called many members of Congress on Wednesday night and that "they're into background checks".

In one of the videos, Stoneman Douglas senior Emma Gonzalez reads a speech written on the back of notes from her AP Gov class.

David Hogg talks about his experiences at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High on 15 February when a gunman opened fire.

"I think that if you look", he said, "it's widely used in multiple different hunting scenarios", he said.

In Washington, survivors and those affected by mass shootings gathered to talk to Trump at the White House.

For nearly a half-hour after a school shooter dropped his assault-style rifle and escaped Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, police officers thought they were seeing his actions live on the school's security system. "Being a student teacher has shown me the fear and tension among the staff and administration". "We demand reform." Student Aly Sheehy expressed her grief and frustration in a poem entitled "Dear Mr. President".

Trump suggested that part of the solution to preventing school shootings is having armed, trained teachers on campus.

"I'm a native Floridian, I grew up on a ranch, I've always had guns", Nelson said.

The 17-year-old was among hundreds of Florida students who descended on the state legislature this week to demand gun control laws. We heard frustration about the Federal Bureau of Investigation not responding to some of the warning signs that were present in the Florida case.

"Everyone wants to take action and make change in this country", said the account creator, a 19 year old California college student who asked to remain anonymous arguing that the story is not about her. "We have the power to change the world around us".

Corcoran said the news did not dissuade him from moving ahead with what he was calling the "marshal" plan to let local law-enforcement officials train and deputize someone at the school who would be authorized to carry a gun. But they were disappointed by the lack of commitment. "My heart is just broken for my whole community", she said, describing the guilt she felt about the fact that her son is still alive.
