Snowstorm expected to hit Thursday night

Between 25 and 35 centimetres of snow is expected to fall in southern Alberta between Wednesday and Friday according to a weather alert from Environment Canada issued Tuesday afternoon Season's biggest storm coming
Stacy Houston | 12 February, 2018, 02:08

As of noon, O'Hare International Airport had seen 7.3 inches of snowfall, while Midway International Airport had seen 6.8 inches, the weather service said.

The Storm Prediction Center says, "moderate to locally heavy snow, with rates up to one inch per hour, will continue expanding eastward this morning".

An occasional flurry will be possible Thursday, however, the snow chances are going to be very minimal during the daytime hours.

Estimated accumulation in Woodstock exceeded six inches, Romeoville exceeded four inches and St. Charles received 4.5 inches.

The snow will begin late Thursday afternoon in far western Wisconsin, then move east through the evening, reaching eastern Wisconsin by around 9 p.m.

Friday Night, snow likely, mainly before 1 a.m.

Iowans are bracing for another wintry blast late Thursday into the weekend, with parts of the state already under a winter storm warning. This along with strong wind speeds will make morning travel incredibly hard.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties.

Wind chill temperatures were expected to drop below 0 Fahrenheit (minus 18 C) in many areas across the upper Midwest.

Despite the winds gradually falling down and moving to the east, a strong level pressure system is developing in the Canadian Rockies that will move southeast, impacting the Chicago area.

Some 6 to 12 inches (15 to 30 cm) of snow and a 1/4 inch (.5 cm) of ice accumulation were in the forecast, the National Weather Service said. The northern extent of the snow will not be quite as heavy, and the duration of the event will not last as long north of the Tri-Cities.

We're still on track for more snow Saturday too.

Expect overcast skies and a high in the mid-20s today. Much of northern IL had seen between 8 and 12 inches of snow by Friday afternoon, CNN meteorologist Taylor Ward said.

The snowstorm, which will bring a combination of ice, snow, and freezing rain throughout several states and the Great Lakes, is already leaving various states to deal with inclement weather and unsafe commutes.
