A person has been shot outside the National Security Agency's Maryland headquarters.

The NSA was the scene of a similar incident in March 2015 when police fired on an SUV, killing the driver and wounding a passenger after they failed to obey orders to stop at its heavily guarded entrance. Bullet holes were seen in the vehicle's windshield, but two officials told CBS News that no one was hit by gunfire.

It's not clear whether any weapons were in the vehicle, the officials said.

Local fire and police departments had said earlier on Twitter they were responding to a possible shooting incident. "The situation is under control and there are no ongoing security or safety concerns", NSA spokesperson Chris Augustine said in a statement. The Anne Arundel County Fire Department provided assistance and the FBI is investigating the situation.

"Meade", and the White House offers thoughts and prayers with those who have been affected, spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said.

The incident occurred about 7 a.m. ET (1200 GMT) when a vehicle tried to enter the U.S. Army installation that houses the agency without authorization, the agency said in a statement.

Despite prominent highway signs, drivers occasionally take the wrong exit and end up at the tightly secured gates. Many other roads in the area are experiencing heavy traffic.
