Russian Federation says it met nuclear limits, questions U.S. compliance

Russia criticizes US implementation of arms treaty UN chief congratulates US, Russia on nuclear arsenal cuts, urges further disarmament
Ray Hunter | 07 February, 2018, 02:03

"February 5, 2018 marks the date that the treaty's central limits on each country's strategic nuclear arsenal take effect", U.S. State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement.

The economic tussle between the West, headed by the United States against Russian Federation is developing steadily.

"Russia confirms its commitment to the New START treaty", the Foreign Ministry said. A new nuclear policy issued by the Trump administration on Friday, which vows to counter a rush by the Russians to modernize their forces even while staying within the treaty limits, is touching off a new kind of nuclear arms race. As at February 5, 2018 our aggregate potential is as follows: "527 deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles, deployed submarine-launched ballistic missiles and deployed heavy bombers; 1,444 warheads on deployed intercontinental ballistic missiles, deployed submarine-launched ballistic missiles and deployed heavy bombers; 779 deployed and non-deployed ballistic missile launchers, operational and non-deployed submarine-based ballistic missile launchers and deployed and non-deployed heavy bombers", the Foreign Ministry said.

However, Russia has been reinforcing its tactical nuclear arsenal that is not covered by the treaty.

"Just another bad deal that the country made, whether it's START, whether it's the Iran deal", Trump said at the time.

Monday's deadline to comply with the reductions in the treaty comes days after the Trump administration released its Nuclear Posture Review, which focuses heavily on Russian Federation.

But, the real test begins now, says Rahul Dravid
Since an ICC event is incomplete without an India vs Pakistan encounter, the U-19 World Cup saw one too, in the semi-finals. As for the present, though, Dravid was pleased, especially because India went through the campaign undefeated.

The report, released Friday, alleges that Russian Federation is building a "large, diverse and modern" set of systems capable of being armed with nuclear or conventional weapons. It means bringing nuke warhead numbers down to 1,550 and cutting down the number of delivery vehicles like missiles and bombers to 700-800 for each side.

In Monday's statement, Nauert said the United States "remains committed" to arms control efforts and "will continue to fully implement" New START.

"Implementation of the New START Treaty enhances the safety and security of the United States and our allies and makes strategic relations between the United States and the Russian Federation more stable, transparent, and predictable".

"The Russian Federation has fully fulfilled its obligations to reduce strategic offensive arms..."

The ministry also reaffirmed Russia's commitment to the treaty and urged to continue the search for solutions to the existing problems around the document.
